Elvis in Tupelo (5th September)

We head first to The Elvis Birthplace. Set on the original land of his home, which Elvis bought and gave to the city back in 1956. There is a museum, with memorabilia of when he was in Tupelo in the early years, plus many artifacts collected over the years by one woman, a very good friend of Elvis's. Then outside are a couple of buildings, one being the house where he was born, the other being the church where he and his parents went. The pastor of the church taught Elvis to play the guitar. A statue of Elvis as a 13 yo carrying his guitar is also situated in the park. We then drive to a few more places linked to Elvis, such as his Elementary and High schools, but also the hardware store where his mother bought Elvis his first guitar (rather than a rifle). The counter is still being used, and the actual spot that the two stood is marked. Our next stop is a bigger than life sized statue of Elvis when he did a concert in the town in 1956. Next is a hamburger place which Elvis used to frequent after school, and also came back to in 1956. We sit in the Elvis booth, where Elvis actually sat!! After lunch we visit the Automobile Museum, which has a fantastic array of cars from 1889 up to modern day, including one of Elvis's cars, one of Liberace's and two of B B King's. They also have a Woodie car! A great Elvis day, and Ted just luuuuvvvves Elvis.

  1. I've never been an Elvis fan but after going to Graceland in Memphis I see Elvis in a totally different way and one day would love to go to Tupelo ...
