Onwards to Mississippi (1st September)

A long driving day today, but hopefully the weather will stay fine to let us see the scenery. The first part of the journey is through the swamp. Looking into the thick forest with the Spanish Moss you can see where the stories of ghosts and voodoo originate. We enter Mississippi and our first stop is to view what is left of the first restaurant in the state at Brookhaven. It has a cute coffee pot on the roof. Eventually we make it back to Natchez so that we can take the scenic route to Vicksburg. The Parkway takes us through wooded areas, apparently home to a wide range of wild life!! Another stop is at the ruins of the largest plantation house, Windsor. The house burnt in the 1890's but left the columns standing and a sense of an era of southern excess. At Port Gibson, we see a novel spire ornament, pointing the direction that Jesus went! We did see some wildlife, one close up and the other in the distance. The thunderstorms rolled in again in the afternoon. We missed one and caught the other. It looks like it will be a common occurrence for the rest of the week.
